Helen Browning’s Royal Oak, Swindon
A pub-with-rooms set on a 1,500-acre organic farm, Helen Browning’s Royal Oak is an entirely unique experience. Owned by chief executive of the Soil Association, Helen Browning OBE, it’s in a rural village on the Marlborough Downs and is a poetic combination of connectivity with the land and old school fun.
Guests dine on hearty pub fare, while rooms are located in a rustic adjacent building. There’s a focus on animal welfare and wildlife conservation, and alongside that there’s a joyful conviviality to the experience, particularly in the communal space, The Wallow, which has books, tea and coffee, an honesty bar, fridge and record player. The inn also has its own farm shop so you can take a little piece of the experience home with you.
Four rooms are dog-friendly (£20 per dog per stay) and pets are allowed in some public spaces as well.
Sign of the Angel, Lacock
