Sports & pursuits
Taunton Country Cricket Ground, overlooked by three historic churches and The Castle Hotel, has played host to some of the game’s all-time greats and serves also as an open-air concert ground. If your sporting pursuits are more adventurous than a day at the cricket, you’ll find the West Country has some of the best climbing, caving and canoeing in the UK, not to mention an off-road Landrover centre.

Hestercombe House and its beautiful historic gardens, the Bishops Palace in Wells, Coleridge Cottage, Glastonbury Tor, Dunster Castle…all on our doorstep. Not to mention the stunning natural landscape. Make The Castle your base and explore Cheddar Gorge, Exmoor or the Mendip, Quantock and Blackdown Hills. Arts & museums
Housed in Taunton’s 12th century castle, The Museum of Somerset tells the story of the county going back 200 million years! As well as the permanent displays, the museum offers regularly changing temporary exhibitions. Or why not visit the Fleet Air Arm Museum, home to the legendary Concorde and many military machines.
Family days
Explore the famous limestone caverns at Wookey Hole Caves, take a steam train to Dunster Castle, parade the grand pier at Weston-Super-Mare or enjoy an adrenalin-fuelled day out at Brean Theme Park. Return to the Castle Hotel after a full day out and sleep well!
Shopping
Somerset’s county town of Taunton is a bustling market town, with a mixture of high street favourites and independent stores. It’s also home to the Taunton Independent Market, a must-visit street market showcasing the South West’s best artisan traders of food, drink, crafts, homewares, beauty and fashion. In the nearby town of Street, you’ll find Clark’s Village, an outlet shopping village on the site of the old C&J Clark shoes factory buildings.
